Nature of the business
 
SMTC Corporation (the “Company,” “SMTC,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is a provider of end-to-end electronics manufacturing services, including product design and engineering services, printed circuit board assembly, production, enclosure, cable assembly, precision metal fabrication, systems integration and comprehensive testing services, configuration to order, build to order and direct order fulfillment. We have more than
50
manufacturing and assembly lines at strategically located facilities in the United States, Mexico, and China that provide local support and manufacturing capabilities to our global customers. Our services extend over the entire electronic product life cycle from new product development and new product introduction through to growth, maturity and end of life phases. As of
September 29, 2019,
we had
2,941
employees of which
2,541
were full time and contract employees.
 
In
September 2019,
the Company announced plans to close its manufacturing operations in China before the end of fiscal
2019.

The accompanying unaudited interim consolidated financial statements of the Company have been prepared in accordance with the accounting principles and methods of application disclosed in the audited consolidated financial statements within the Company’s Form

-K for the fiscal period ended
December 30, 2018, (

-K”) filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”) on
March 15, 2019,
except for the adoption of the new accounting policies related to leases which is outlined in note
2.
The accompanying unaudited interim consolidated financial statements include adjustments of a normal, recurring nature that are, in the opinion of management, necessary for a fair statement of the consolidated financial statements under generally accepted accounting principles in the United States (“U.S. GAAP”). These unaudited interim consolidated financial statements should be read in conjunction with the Company’s audited consolidated financial statements contained in the Company’s Form
10
-K. The consolidated balance sheet at
December 30, 2018
was derived from the audited annual consolidated financial statements, but does
not
contain all of the footnote disclosures from the annual consolidated financial statements.
 
Unless otherwise specified or the context requires otherwise, all statements in these notes to the interim consolidated financial statements regarding financial figures are expressed in thousands of U.S. dollars.
