Board Members

Wayne McLeod
Wayne McLeod has served as a director since February 2005 and Chair of our Board since August 2005. Mr. McLeod served as President, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of CCL Industries during his term there from 1980-1999. He is currently a member of the boards of directors of Morguard Corp., Turbo Power Systems Inc., New Flyer Industries Inc., and Richards Packaging Inc., all listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. He also serves on the Board of the Institute of Corporate Directors.

John Caldwell
John Caldwell has extensive general management experience and a strong record of accomplishment in advanced technology. Prior to joining SMTC in 2003, he was President and Chief Executive Officer at Geac Computer Corporation, one of Canada’s leading software companies. Prior to Geac, John spent twelve years at CAE Inc., the world leader in flight simulation and training systems. He was President and Chief Executive Officer during the company’s dramatic growth though the 1990’s. John also serves on several boards of directors of advanced technology companies, including Advanced Micro Devices, and Faro Technologies.

Thomas Cowan
Thomas Cowan has served as a director since March 2003. Mr. Cowan is currently CEO of Vecker Corporation. From January 2005 to December 2005 Mr. Cowan was Executive in Residence at RockRidge Capital Partners. From December 2001 to December 2004, Mr. Cowan was Chairman, President and CEO of OutlookSoft Corporation. From March 2000 to December 2001, Mr. Cowan served as Chairman and President of Vcommerce Corporation. Previously he served for over 20 years in various financial and general management positions at IBM Corporation. Mr. Cowan is currently Chairman of the Board of Visitors of Wake Forest University Graduate School of Management and serves on the board of directors of Cormont Inc.

David Sandberg
David Sandberg was appointed director in April 2009.  Mr. Sandberg is currently the managing member, founder, and portfolio manager of Red Oak Partners, LLC, a NY-based hedge fund, founded in March 2003 and co-manager and co-founder of Pinnacle Fund LLP, founded in 2008.  Red Oak Partners LLC is SMTC’s largest shareholder.  Previously, Mr. Sandberg co-managed JH Whitney & Co's Green River Fund from 1998-2002.  Mr. Sandberg received a BA in Economics and a BS in Industrial Management from Carnegie Mellon University.

John Marinucci
John Marinucci was appointed as Director in June, 2008. He is currently President and Chief Executive Officer of New Flyer Industries Inc.  Since his appointment at New Flyer in 2002, Mr. Marinucci successfully restructured its manufacturing operations and the aftermarket services business and transformed New Flyer into the North American leader in the heavy-duty transit market. Under his leadership, New Flyer completed its IPO in August 2005 and successfully completed secondary offerings in July 2007, and April 2008. Previously, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer for National Steel Car and is a former President of the Canadian Association of Railway Suppliers.  Currently he is on the board of directors for New Flyer Industries Inc., CWB Group, Hydrogen & Fuel Cells Canada (H2FCC), and Weststart-CALSTART.

Alex Walker
Alex Walker was appointed as Director in June, 2008. He is currently Founder and Managing Director of Blackmore Partners Inc., an advisory firm that provides advice in strategy development, acquisitions and divestitures, and institutional fundraising.  Prior to joining Blackmore Partners in 2007, Mr. Walker was Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Cube Route Inc., Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Abridean Inc., Managing Venture Partner and Executive Vice President, Business Development of Divine Inc., Chief Financial Officer of GNC Inc., and Chief Operating Officer and Chief Financial Officer of Guernsey Bel. He has extensive experience in raising debt and equity capital, negotiating divestiture and acquisition transactions, corporate turnarounds, and he has served on the board of several companies.
